November 13, 2008 - We started the meeting with the pledge of allegiance, the scout sign, and a few songs. The boys then learned all about archery from our new Cubmaster Wiley, and he showed them his own bow and showed them how to use it. We deisgned and built our own indoor bow and arrow. We made the bow by placing a larger rubber band on a clothing hanger. For the arrow, we used a 1 foot long cylindrical dowel (from any lumber or craft store), cut a knotch on one end to fit to the rubber band, and used super glue and tape to attached a suction cup on the end. Walt then lead the kids with setting up a target, and he took turns with them practicing our archery skiils.

ABOUT THE CUB SCOUTS! Cub Scouts is an activity-based, fun, family program intended to help boys develop good Character, Citizenship, Inititiative, Respect, and Responsibility.

What Is Cub Scouting?
Cub Scouting is a year-round family program designed for boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade (or 7, 8, 9, and 10 years of age). Parents, leaders, and organizations work together with the scouts to learn new skills and to develop good character and citizenship.

From former President’s Gerald Ford and Bill Clinton to business tycoon Bill Gates, astronaut Neil Armstrong, sports extraordinaire Hank Aaron, and actor Harrison Ford, the scouts have fostered a foundation of initiative and achievement for millions of boys since 1912.

Scouts join a Cub Scout pack and are assigned to a den, usually a group of six to eight boys that are their age. Dens meet two to three times per month. Once a month, all of the dens and family members gather for a Pack meeting under the direction of a Cubmaster and Pack Committee.

Volunteer Leadership
Thousands of volunteer leaders, both men and women, are involved in the Cub Scout program. They serve in a variety of positions from unit leaders to Pack Committee Chair, Committee Members, Den Leaders, and chartered organization representatives.

Advancement Plan
Recognition is important to young boys. The Cub Scouting advancement plan provides fun for the boys, giving them a sense of personal achievement as they earn badges, and strengthen family understanding as adult family members work with boys on advancement projects.

Cub Scouting means "doing." Everything in Cub Scouting is designed to have the boys doing things. Activities are used to achieve the aims of Scouting—citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness. Many of the activities happen right in the Den and Pack.

Age-appropriate camping programs are packed with theme-oriented action that brings Scouts into the great out-of-doors. Cub Scout pack families enjoy camping in local council camps and other council-approved campsites. Camping programs combine fun and excitement with doing one's best, getting along with others, and developing an appreciation for ecology and the world of the outdoors.

Character Development
Since its origin, the Scouting program has been an educational experience concerned with values. Core values are the basis of good character development. In helping boys develop character, Cub Scouting promotes the following 12 core values: Citizenship, Compassion, Cooperation, Courage, Faith, Health and fitness, Honesty, Perseverance, Positive Attitude, Resourcefulness, Respect, and Responsibility. Character is "values in action."
